What is an FVRCP vaccine?

FVRCP is a combination vaccine that protects cats against three serious viral diseases: feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia.

The FVRCP vaccine protects cats against three highly contagious and potentially life-threatening viral infections. Feline viral rhinotracheitis causes severe upper respiratory illness with discharge and sneezing. Calicivirus also triggers respiratory symptoms and can cause painful mouth ulcers. Panleukopenia, sometimes called feline distemper, attacks the immune system and intestines and historically has caused high mortality rates in kittens.

This combination vaccine is considered the core protection that veterinarians recommend for all cats, whether indoor or outdoor. Kittens typically receive an initial series starting at 6-8 weeks of age, followed by booster shots, then periodic updates throughout life. The vaccine works by stimulating the cat's immune system to recognize and fight these viruses before natural infection occurs.

FVRCP is standard across Denver-area veterinary practices and animal shelters. Many cat owners choose to vaccinate because these three diseases spread easily through respiratory droplets, shared food and water bowls, or contact with contaminated surfaces. Even vaccinated cats may experience mild sneezing or lethargy after the shot, which typically resolves within a day. Denver veterinarians can discuss individual vaccination schedules based on your cat's lifestyle and risk factors. Find local providers through low-cost vaccine clinics if affordability is a concern.
